Thank you for your support of Safe Shores this year! With your help, so far we’ve come to the aid over 1,000 children and families in crisis.
Take, for example, 12-year old Aisha, who witnessed the murder of her mother in their own home. Terrified and left alone, Aisha called 911 and frantically tried to resuscitate her mother. Tragically, it was too late.
Aisha was referred to Safe Shores for therapy, where it became clear that she was plagued with traumatic memories of the gun going off and the guilt of being unable to save her mother. When her therapist asked her to create a photo collage about her feelings, it showed some troubling images.
However, in a small corner of the collage, her therapist also notice Aisha had included a rainbow. That rainbow because a recurrent and symbolic theme in their sessions.
Towards the end of the treatment, Aisha asked to make a brilliant, colorful rainbow and sun out of modeling clay. She explained that therapy was like a rainbow and the sun, which come out after a storm. And, soon after that, Aisha began to focus less on the memories of her mother’s murder and more on remembering her mother’s love.
Safe Shores depends on you to help kids like Aisha weather the storms of abuse and violence. In addition to art and play therapy, your tax-deductable gift could provide new clothing, emergency financial assistance, support groups for caregivers, books, school supplies, and so much more to children and families who desperately need it.
Before we say goodbye to 2016, please help Aisha and others like her find their own rainbow by giving as generously as you can.
